Setting up your Desk for Success

Every night you spend about 7-8 hours in sleeping, therefore, it is recommended you spend some dollars to get a good bed.  Well, you spend some 7-8 hours sitting at the office.  This suggests that the same attention be paid to ensuring your body is falling apart while sitting down.  Here are a few tips:

1. Get that mouse closer to you – A great deal of shoulder and neck pain is related to positioning of the mouse.  People have a tendency to have the mouse away from their body when it shoulder closer.  If your arm is extended out in front you are putting unnecessary strain on neck and shoulder stabilizers.

2. Check out the chair – Okay, have you ever put on a pair of $200 Nike air technology, arch support shoes?  Comfortable, right?  Now, have you ever run a marathon in bath slippers?  If you have a cheap, unsupportive chair that your feet are dangling to touch the ground you are beating yourself up while sitting.  Put some dollars into the chair if you can…I am not saying get one that gives you a massage and does your excel spreadsheets for you, but certainly something better than what you sat on in elementary school.

3. Line up the screen – Computer screens have a tendency to be too low, too high, or too far away.  There will be a habit to strain, crinkling up your neck to squint as you flip through massive amounts of data.  Here is a rule of thumb: if you have to lean forward or tilt your neck in any direction…move your screen!
