Knowing the Difference Between “I can’t” and “I won’t”
Alright, if you are getting older, here is a list of common objections I hear on a regular basis:
2. I can’t get out and walk everyday…I don’t have enough time
3. I can’t get healthy because I am old and falling apart
Now, let’s address these one by one.
2. You don’t have time to walk…or you won’t make time? There is so much research that talks about how great exercise is for people’s general health and that walking is a critical component. But I don’t want to talk about research, I WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOU! This is for your benefit, not anyone else’s. What is worse, not making time to walk or making time to constantly go to the doctor?
3. You can’t get healthy…or you won’t give it a shot? I am a realist…there are many ailments that affect people as they age. These include arthritis, slow healing, and general aches and pains that were not there before. If you constantly believe that you will never get better, then you will not. I am not a person that believes that “positive affirmations fix everything” but having determination goes a long way. Improving your diet, participating in regular exercise, engaging in social activities, having regular check up with the doctor, etc. all can be time consuming but they improve the overall quality of life. And quality has a pretty good trump of miserable quantity.
I can’t…I won’t? Really look at what you are doing on a regular basis and ask this tough question. You may find along the way there is a lot more strength inside and out waiting to make a difference in you.
