Focus on Fun...The Rest Will Take Care of Itself
I have asked many young athletes what they love about sports, often times it is “I want to be a pro” or “I want to be the best” or “I want to win.” Those are all great but they aren’t very substantial because if you are 12 years old high school is still far off let alone the pros, unless you are Tiger Woods there is always someone better, and the best will always lose a share of the time.
These goals aren’t in check with reality or are sometimes out of the individuals control.
Let’s try this a different way. I asked a football player, “what is your favorite thing to do when you get the ball.” He said, “score a touchdown.” I replied, “Okay, well you don’t score a touchdown everytime do you still have fun when you get the ball?” He said, “Well, yeah.” I said, “Why is that?” “Because I could break free down the field and score.” I retorted, “So let me guess, you just want the ball.” He said, “Well yeah!!”
Here is what I am driving at. If by talking to your young athlete and getting them past the touchdowns, the statistics, and the small moments of glory and help them realize what they truly love, such as having the ball, being on the field, or competing with friends…….the other three will take care of themselves
